ATHLETES OF ZEUS

Sport in Antiquity

13 September 2009 – 10 January 2010

If we want to identify the origins of the extraordinary passion for sport and games that is so keenly felt in our modern world, we need look no further than one great early civilisation: Ancient Greece. The image of the Greek athlete embodies the principle of kalokagathia (“beautiful and good”), which is the basis not only of sporting events but also of the vibrant spirit of an entire society.
If we were to consider this principle in more general cultural terms, we would agree that it is simply a founding principle of the way we are. Ancient Greek history teaches us that competition is not limited to sport, but extends to a wide variety of fields, including the arts and philosophy.
