HANS PURRMANN
A master of colour. Paintings, writings and friendships.
10 April – 28 August 2011
Hans Purrmann was born in Speyer in the Rhineland 1880. His artistic career began to develop in Munich and Berlin among the masters of German Impressionism (Liebermann, Slevogt and Corinth) and the new avant-garde (Kandinsky, Klee and Marc). Then in 1905 came a turning point when he moved to Paris, staying there until 1914. In Paris, Purrmann became familiar with the work of two artists who were to be instrumental in his development: Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse, of whom he was both a pupil and a friend.
