HARALD SZEEMANN

The wondrous journey

16 January - 8 February 2009

Harald Szeemann (Bern 1933 – Locarno 2005) was one of the major exponents of contemporary art in the post-war period. Widely known as “The Exhibition King”, from the early Sixties he radically changed the way that art exhibitions were designed, organised and mounted.
In awarding him the prestigious Max Beckmann Prize in 2000, the jury described some of his exhibitions as historic events, equating them with the famous Armory Show. Since his death, his life and work have been the theme of exhibitions, conferences and celebrations. A number of studies have also been produced, illustrating what an influential person he was in the field of contemporary arts, even though he pursued his own individual path, which was on the fringes of traditional exhibition methods.
