MYSTERIUM CRUCIS
Ancient holy crosses from Canton Ticino
27 March – 13 June 2010
As a fitting reminder of Easter, an important exhibition will be held at the Museo d’Arte Mendrisio, which will focus on the cross as one of the greatest symbols of mankind and Christianity. The cross is documented well before the advent of Christianity, and its dissemination in different world cultures expresses extraordinary multiplicity and a wealth of symbolism. The cross is conceived as a central point that extends in four directions, which also connects the vertical and horizontal lines. Seen as a cosmic symbol, the cross unites heaven and earth, linking space and time and responding to man’s need for guidance. With the historic advent of Christianity, the cross takes on other meanings. From the symbol of death and condemnation it becomes the sign of redemption and of life, embodying the cosmic, biblical and soteriological dimensions, expressing, in short, the mystery of Christianity. The exhibition is the work of the Dean of Mendrisio, Don Angelo Crivelli.
