EXHIBITION ARCHIVE - EXHIBITIONS SINCE 2005

RENATO BIROLLI

1 May - 3 July 2005

After recent exhibitions on Eduardo Chillida (1999), Alberto Giacometti (2000), Fritz Wotruba (2002) and Walter Kurt Wiemken (2003) - all high profile figures in the history of European twentieth century art - in a twenty-year old tradition the Mendrisio Museum of Art has organised a wide-ranging retrospective, this year of one of the main exponents of Italian aestheticism, Renato Birolli (Verona 1905 - Milan 1959), to celebrate the centenary of the artist's birth.
Sixteen years have passed since the anthological exhibition on Birolli held at the Palazzo Reale in Milan, and now the retrospective at the Mendrisio concentrates on the mature years (1955-59) of this artist from Verona, a period in which he became a major exponent in the renewal of Italian art at a time when abstract art was particularly in vogue.
