THE HOSPITAL OF THE HOLY VIRGIN OF MENDRISIO
150 years of history and recollections (Casa Croci)
12 May – 17 July 2010
On the occasion of 150 years since its foundation, an exhibition has been organised at Casa Croci on the history of the Regional Hospital of the Holy Virgin of Mendrisio. The exhibition and catalogue are the work of the Historical Archive of Mendrisio for the Department of Museums and Culture in association with the Hospital.
The exhibition layout follows the distinctive architecture of the building, and focuses on three particular aspects of the history and development of this hospital.
On the ground floor is a display of documents, books, votive offerings, portraits and other items relating to the history of medicine. In particular, the display will include exhibits from the Turconi bequest, the starting point for the development of the hospital (including a portrait, a will, the history of the property, and so on). Also on display are some paintings from the benefactors’ gallery.
The first floor tells the story of the hospital’s construction, including plans signed by the architect Fontana, the completion of the building in Neo-Classical style and a whole range of items relating to the administration and health management of a 19th century charitable institution.
