"THE MOST BEAUTIFUL STATUES OF ANTIQUITY"
11 November 2006 - 14 January 2007
There are two main themes in the exhibition: a chronological survey from the Spinarius to the Parthenon Friezes, where the re-appearance of a Classical statue symbolises a turning-point in the rediscovery of ancient Greece, a "mythical" rediscovery first by Rome for a very long time, not returning to its origins until early in the 19th century, with the great archeological excavations. The second theme explores a particular area of mythology from room to room, with reference to images of the divinities and heroes of the casts and highlights the fascination which Classical mythology still exerts on us today, eternally present in Greek poetry and prose.
