Works from the Macconi Foundation
22 September - 9 December 2007
The show which will open the autumn exhibition season at the Museo d'arte Mendrisio will provide the public with an insight into a period of history in Ticino, and its contribution to events on the international art scene from the mid to late 20th century. The show focuses on an important collection of works put together by Gino Macconi over thirty years, as owner of the Galleria Mosaico - an art gallery which rose from the ashes of the Nord-Sud Gallery in Lugano. Situated on the Italian border at Chiasso, the gallery played a pivotal role in the relationship between artists working in Lombardy centred around Milan, and artists from other European countries, mainly in the late Sixties to early Seventies. This gallery can be seen as a cultural crossroads, a place for where meetings and exchanges, and reflecting the aesthetic experiments of the period.
